Marvin Lewis has resigned with the Cincinnati Bengals. Brown and Lewis gave a press conference on Tuesday and didn't answer any real questions and alluded to changes, and Brown has said that Lewis will have more control in the organization. When asked how long the deal was, Mike Brown couldn't give an answer for some unknown reason. The press conference was very awkward and weird and Mike Brown failed to answer any real questions. I can't overstate just how weird that press conference was, definitely the most weird press conference I've listened to. I don't know what more to say about it. There was hints on whether the scouting department would be improved, but nothing concrete. In fact the only real thing that was concrete about that press conference was that Marvin Lewis will be back, and no one knows for how long.
Marvin Lewis' 9th season will be a record for the Cincinnati Bengals.
UPDATE: Marvin Lewis' contract is rumored to be for two more years. But why did Mike Brown refuse to answer this question at the press conference?

Marvin Lewis Still in Contract Negotiations
Today is known as Black Monday in the NFL as many coaches find out that they will not be returning next season. However, there has still not been any kind of formal announcement on whether or not Marvin Lewis will be returning as head coach for the Bengals in 2011. Marvin Lewis is technically unemployed at this point, since his contract has expired and he's already been gaining interest from other teams. The 49ers have reportedly already been planning on interviewing Lewis for the gig if he's not back with the Bengals next season. The University of Pittsburgh has also shown their interest in wanting Marvin Lewis.
The sign that there's still no decision on Lewis' status thus far should indicate that Mike Brown and Lewis are in negotiation still, Geoff Hobson reports. After the end of the season meeting that the players had as they do at the end of every season, players still didn't seem to know if Lewis was going to be back or not. Safety Chris Crocker is uncertain, but thinks that Marvin does want to be back.
"I think he wants to be back and I think everyone wants him back," Crocker said. "But the decision has to be between him and ownership. You know one thing: When you lose and you don't have a good season, then there are going to be changes. You don't know what's going to change. We're just ready to find out and go forward." Crocker has also looked back and knows that they've lost 12 games, but it's been a close 12 games. "We were in a lot of those games," he said. He's right, of the games the Bengals have lost, eight of those games have been decided by eight points or less. And in the Bills game the Bengals had a 31-14 lead going into the half.
Should-have-been-in-the-pro-bowl left tackle Andrew Whitworth doesn't know what's going to happen.
"You never know what coaching stuff will change and what can't; that's the nature of this business," Whitworth said. "For players, to realize, who knows, the next time you could see these guys is Aug. 1? You just don't know with all the things going on and the possibility of a lockout, you don't know what could happen."
Whitworth does agree with Marvin Lewis that an indoor practice facility will be necessary as it's looking more and more likely that an 18-game season will be a part of the new CBA, not even mentioning that the Bengals are in a cold weather season and have had to go to other places to work out when snow hits hard in Cincinnati.
"That's just common sense," Whitworth said. "If we're playing games in late January then it's going to be physically impossible to practice effectively if you don't have somewhere to go inside." Marvin's been advocating an indoor practice facility for a while now and the likelihood of an 18-game season should help give him more leverage.
So will it be a Black Tuesday for Marvin Lewis tomorrow? The decision should be announced on Tuesday on if Marvin Lewis will be back with the Bengals in 2011.

Looking Forward to the Bengals Future
There are many decisions Mike Brown will have to make this offseason. The first of which is Marvin Lewis' contract which is up.
"I don't know what's going to happen, all I know is that I'm unemployed," Marvin Lewis said after the game today. Marvin said he expects to know his fate by Monday, and no one is certain on what Mike Brown will decide on for the future. On one hand, Marvin Lewis hasn't won a playoff game in his entire career as a head coach for the Bengals. On the other hand, Lewis won 2 of his last 3 games and was very competitive in the loss against the Ravens and has had a lot of success with young players in the last few games. Also, with the uncertainty of next season with no CBA in place, it might be difficult to get a new coaching staff in place. Marvin has also made requests to Mike Brown for an indoor practice facility, and is one of the reasons Lewis held out on signing a contract last offseason.
Another decision Mike Brown will be facing soon is deciding whether or not to pick up the option on wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. There is a $6 million option on Ochocinco and if Brown decides not to pick up the option, it'll cost him $3.5 million, so it's essentially a $2.5 million decision as it's going to cost Brown $3.5 million either way. The Bengals are currently at a loss right now without a definite #1 wide receiver, yes they have Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell, but right now they are looking like two #2 receivers.
Brown will also have to decide where to go in the draft. The Bengals will be picking 4th in the NFL draft because they have the stronger schedule than the Bills or Broncos. If the Bengals do decide to release Chad Ochocinco, they could go with AJ Green, a top, can't miss WR prospect and is being compared to the likes of Calvin and Andre Johnson. The Bengals could also go with looking towards the defensive line and drafting DE Da'Quan Bowers out of Clemson or DT Nick Fairley out of Auburn. However, the Bengals in the later half of the season have seemed to find their pass rush with Carlos Dunlap, who broke the Bengals rookie sack record with 9.5 sacks. The record was previously held by Justin Smith with 8.5 sacks. The Breakdown Blog will be breaking down all of these prospects in the draft in the coming weeks.
